Understanding Analytical Testing

What common analytical tests measure, what they do not establish, and how to verify a certificate of analysis yourself.

Our Approach
Does ViloLab test every batch?+
No. ViloLab does not operate a laboratory and does not test every batch. Third-party analytical documentation is available for selected products and batches, and COAs are provided when available.
Who issues the documentation you provide?+
Documentation we provide is issued by independent analytical laboratories, not by ViloLab. Each report applies only to the specific product and batch named on it.
How do I get documentation for a product?+
Ask through the contact form or note it in your Research Order Request. We will tell you what documentation exists for that product and batch before any order is confirmed.
What HPLC Measures
What is HPLC?+
HPLC (High-Performance Liquid Chromatography) is an analytical technique that separates, identifies, and quantifies components in a mixture. It is commonly used to determine the purity of a compound by measuring the proportion of the target compound relative to total detected material.
What does a purity result mean?+
A purity result (e.g., 99.5%) means that the target compound represents 99.5% of the total material detected by that HPLC analysis, for that sample. It does not measure what the remaining material is.
What does purity not establish?+
  • Purity does not confirm the identity of the compound (that requires a separate identity test)
  • Purity does not establish sterility or freedom from endotoxins
  • Purity does not confirm exact vial quantity (that requires an assay test)
  • One report on one batch does not guarantee future batches
Identity Testing
What is identity testing?+
Identity testing confirms that a compound is what it is labeled to be. Mass spectrometry is a common method: it measures the mass-to-charge ratio of molecules and compares the result to a known reference standard for the target compound.
Is identity testing separate from purity testing?+
Yes. Purity and identity are distinct measurements. A compound can test as high-purity while still requiring identity confirmation to verify it is the named substance.
How to Verify a COA
How do I verify a COA independently?+
Many independent laboratories print a unique verification key on each report. Enter that key on the issuing laboratory’s own verification page to confirm the record — compound name, batch, test date, and results — directly with the lab.
What should I check on the COA?+
Confirm that the product name, batch or lot number, test date, and reported results match the specific material in question, and that the verification key returns a matching record from the issuing lab. A report for a different product, batch, or vendor does not apply to your material.
What if a COA is not available for my product?+
Contact us at shopvilolab@gmail.com with the product name. We will tell you what documentation exists for that product and batch — and if none is available, we will say so.
